Ph.D. and/or M.Sc. graduate student opportunities at the University of Windsor's Paleomagnetic and Rock Magnetic Laboratories.

Funding is available for one to three highly qualified students in a wide range of research projects in paleomagnetism and environmental magnetism.  Potential areas of research include: magnetism of sedimentary basins  including applications to hydrocarbon reservoirs and source rocks,  spatial database design and development for magnetic data, experimental investigations of environmental contaminants, and the use of magnetic techniques to understand shoreline processes. Individual research projects can be tailored to the interests of the student, within these broad areas.  As most of the projects involve multidisciplinary data, students will be strongly encouraged to develop skills in associated fields such as GIS analysis or sedimentary petrology and geochemistry.  Potential PhD students should be familar with the fields of paleomagnetism / rock magnetism / environmental magnetism.

The starting date could be as early as September, 2006; however, a January 2007 start is more likely for international students.  Full tuition scholarships and/or graduate assistantships are available to highly qualified candidates (A- or equivalent average).  Research funding and additional support is provided by Dr. Cioppa.

The University of Windsor (www.uwindsor.ca) is located in the centre of the Great Lakes Basin, across the river from Detroit, Michigan.   The Department of Earth Sciences has a fully equipped paleomagnetic laboratory (2G cryogenic magnetometer, Sapphire Instruments AF demagnetizer with ARM coil and pulse magnetizer),  field equipment  (Bartington field susceptibility suite, Geometrics cesium gradiometer) and a new rock magnetics laboratury ( AGICO Kappabridge, Magnetic Measurements Variable Field Translation Balances).
